In a time when incivility is often used to intimidate others, Voices members discussed how to have civil conversations on sensitive topics at their April meeting in the Robson Clubhouse.
Dr. Kim Robinson, a psychologist who is a Voices member, led the discussion by talking about what she has learned in her work with Braver Angels. Braver Angels is a national group dedicated to fostering civil conversations so that both sides of the US political divide can underside the other side better, she said.
“Every hour I am reminded that this is a divided time in our country,” she said, recounting difficult conversations with her own family members and friends.
To have a civil conversation, “timing is key,” she said. “Find a calm moment. Make sure the other person is open to share their views and listen to yours.
“Don’t withdraw,” she said, “you can’t resolve anything until you are willing to engage with those who disagree with you.”
Voices United is a non-partisan group of Robson Ranch women who share progressive values, perform community outreach, provide civic awareness and social contact for members...and have a good time! We're a 501(c)3 group. Our annual dues are $20.
