About this event
At this meeting we welcome Dr. Andrew J. Torget from the University of North Texas as our guest speaker. Dr. Torget is a renowned historian of nineteenth-century North American history and an award-winning speaker. He has authored or edited five books and consulted on significant historical projects across Texas.
n his presentation, Dr. Torget will chart the improbable rise of Galveston from an abandoned sandbar in 1836 to its emergence as the most important port city in the American Southwest by 1895. Then, in 1900, the most violet hurricane in American history destroyed Galveston, obliterating the city like a modern-day Atlantis and remaking both Texas and the American Southwest once more. Dr.Torget will explore how the rise, destruction, and remaking of Galveston offer us an unparalleled window into the transformations reshaping Texas at the dawn of the twentieth century.
